How My Style Has Changed Since My Teenage Years

When I was 19, I thought I had my style all figured out. Looking back now, I realise I didn’t really know my own style — I was just following what was trendy, buying something new almost every week, and dressing in a way that felt “younger.” But maybe that’s exactly what I was doing: dressing for my age.

Fast forward to 23, and I can see how much my fashion sense has shifted. These days I’m leaning into a more classic, timeless look. And now that my favourite season is here (autumn 🍂), I feel like I can finally dress how I love — cosy knitted jumpers and cardigans, flowy skirts, simple dresses, and comfortable trousers. Clothes that feel like me.

Tips for Finding Your Style (Whatever It Is)

Over the last few years, I’ve learned a few things about style — and I think they apply no matter what kind of look you’re going for. Here’s what I’d tell anyone figuring out their fashion sense in their twenties:

Quality over quantity
Try to avoid buying loads of cheap trend pieces that won’t last. Instead, look for good-quality fabrics like cotton, linen, and wool. They’ll last longer, feel nicer, and elevate your outfit instantly.

Accessories make the outfit
If you’re into a more classic style like me, dainty jewellery that doesn’t tarnish is always a win. You can keep things minimalist, or let one piece be the focal point — like statement earrings or a bold necklace.
For other styles, accessories are a great way to experiment and play around until you find what makes you feel good.

Dress for yourself, not for others
It’s so easy to unconsciously shift your style depending on who you’re with — but please don’t! Wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable, no matter who you’re around.
The only exception? Work. Even then, you can create work-appropriate looks that still show off your signature style if you know the dress code and what makes you feel good.

Embody the style you want
When I wanted to start feeling more put-together and get my life in order, I realised my style had to reflect that. Dressing in a classic chic way helped me believe that I was that version of myself — organised, confident, and intentional. And honestly? It worked.

Extra Tips for a Classic Chic Look

  • If you’re wearing trousers or jeans, add a sleek, thin belt. It instantly elevates your outfit.
  • Wear an actual watch — it’s so much more chic than a fitness tracker or digital watch (save those for the gym).
  • You don’t need to avoid colour, but balance it out: if your outfit has bold colours, keep hair, makeup, and accessories a little softer.
  • Monochrome outfits always look elegant, and you can add a twist with statement shoes.

My style will probably keep evolving as I move through my twenties, but right now I’m loving this shift into cosy classics. It feels like I’ve stopped dressing for trends and started dressing for me. And that feels really good.
